Narrative & Cultural Sovereignty

The 2026 edition of AfroCannes focuses on Narrative and Cultural Sovereignty, emphasizing the importance of creators controlling their own stories, representations, and intellectual property.

In a rapidly evolving global media landscape, the theme examines how African and diasporic filmmakers can assert ownership over their narratives while building sustainable creative ecosystems.

Discussions will address issues such as storytelling power, cultural representation, financing structures, distribution access, and the role of global alliances in strengthening independent voices. By centering sovereignty in storytelling, AfroCannes 2026 aims to empower creators to shape how African histories, identities, and futures are told and understood worldwide.

AfroFuturism: A Diamond in the rough

The 2025 edition of AfroCannes explored Afrofuturism as a powerful creative framework for imagining the future of African and diasporic storytelling. Under the theme “AfroFuturism: A Diamond in the Rough,” the program highlighted the untapped potential of African narratives, talents, and creative industries that remain underrepresented in global cinema.

By examining the intersection of technology, culture, history, and speculative storytelling, the theme encouraged creators to envision new possibilities for African futures on screen. Panels, masterclasses, and artistic showcases explored how Afrofuturism can challenge dominant narratives, inspire innovation, and position African creators at the forefront of global cultural imagination.
